Jaco Pastorius was one of those rare musicians.
Before Jaco, the electric bass was primarily understood as a supporting instrument. It connected rhythm to harmony, reinforced the foundation and held the music together from underneath.
Jaco respected that foundation, but he refused to accept that it represented the complete identity of the instrument.
